This is where I admit that I kind of missed the whole punk scene when I was young, so by the time I’d moved to Hamilton and started playing regularly with Fry Truck at the incredible rock and roll bar This Ain’t
Hollywood, I had no idea that it was named after an album (and song) by Canadian Punk legends Forgotten Rebels. I’d even met Forgotten Rebels members Chris Houston and Mickey DeSadist several times, and still had no clue.
Anyway – in my ignorant bliss, I thought “This Ain’t Hollywood” would make an amazing title for a song (turns out I wasn’t the only one). This song is an ode to both a venue and to the band. When I wrote it, I was
listening to lots of John Prine, and that influenced the sort of tongue-in cheek sketch-of-a-north-end Hamilton bar. It became a bit of an anthem for our band and we played it often – especially when gigging at
the bar that inspired the song. The “girl on the bass” is Fry Truck bassist Carrie Ashworth, by the way. The “dude on the drums” is Robin Pirson (her husband), and the “bums” up front would be me, Dave Pomfret,
Matt Coleman, and Chris Altmann. They are all a special bunch of people, and I still occasionally get the pleasure of performing with them. Three of the songs in our regular set list make an appearance on this
collection (the other two are Shake Hands with the Devil and I’m a Machine).
Anyway – special thanks to Forgotten Rebels for the song inspiration, and to Lou Molinaro for all the opportunities to play original music in an awesome venue.
