about

This song explores themes that people have been signing about for generations: freedom, corruption, war,
and the environment. I wanted to reinforce the “we’ve been here before” nature of these themes by giving
the music itself a vintage vibe. Most of my favourite singer songwriter music is from the early 1970’s, so it
was really satisfying to write and record a song with this kind of feeling.

lyrics

Déjà Vu

Midnight, snowflakes coming down
Moonlight, casting my shadow on the ground
But it don’t look like me
Cause I have wings and I’’m born to be free

Glass breaks, and cuts me from my dream
And someone rushes past, and somebody screams,
“there’s poison in my food! Why is someone poisoning me?”

Oh déjà vu, looks like history’s catching up with you
Oh déjà vu, don’t get too comfortable, cause somebody’s stealing the chair
From right under you, from right under you

Well day breaks and millions of feet hit the floor
And they’re marching off to work, and they’re marching off to war
The enemy is hard to see as he smiles and opens the door

Oh déjà vu, looks like history’s catching up with you
Oh déjà vu, don’t get too comfortable, cause somebody’s stealing the chair
From right under you, from right under you
From right under you (repeat)
