This is a song I wrote in the early 90's on one of those "too quiet" September days. It's from an unreleased album recorded around 2005 or so. I updated the vocals, but otherwise this is the track as it was recorded all those years ago.

I can feel autumn closing in
I've got goosebumps waiting
Underneath my skin

I think I can hear that north wind blow
Soon there'll be school bus closings
On the radio

I'm laying here with my back to the ground
Looks like the trees on fire all around
Leaves falling down
Cover me in red and gold
On a blue September day

There's corn husks blowing down the side of the road
Past the watch dogs watching
With their eyes closed

A screen door slams
A woman shifts
An old man holds a letter in his fist

And into the vacuum left by summer's retreat
The schoolkids burst out into the street
And heedless of the stillborn air
They breathe new life into a blue September day
